STATE HOUSE STATEMENT

The State House has learnt, with regret, claims by the Secretary General of the Civic United Front (CUF) and its Presidential candidate in this year’s General Elections in Zanzibar, Honorable Seif Shariff Hamad, that he has been ignored and his request for an appointment with President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, to discuss the political situation in Zanzibar, turned down.

The State House would like to categorically deny that it has received any request from Honorable Hamad for him to meet President Kikwete since voting day in Zanzibar on Sunday and subsequent nullification of the election process in Zanzibar by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) Chairman Jecha Salim Jecha on Tuesday.

What President Kikwete has received, are complaints by CUF about some actions from some sections of the Police Force in Zanzibar and a request for him to facilitate a conversation between Honorable Hamad and the Chief of the Armed Forces (CDF) General Davis Mwamunyange.

Subsequently, President Kikwete, who is also Commander-in–Chief, has instructed the Inspector-General of Police Ernest Mangu to investigate these claims by CUF and report back to him. Accordingly, he has also instructed his office to facilitate a conversation between General Mwamunyange and CUF officials. 

The State House would like to confirm that President Kikwete is as concerned about the political and security situation in Zanzibar as every Tanzanian is, and has been working tirelessly and consulting widely over the last few days to find amicable and peaceful resolution to the situation in Zanzibar.

While the matter remains firmly in the hands of an independent electoral body in Zanzibar, President Kikwete would like to express his readiness to do whatever is in his powers to regularize the situation in Zanzibar.

UN ISSUES STATEMENT ON TANZANIA GENERAL ELECTIONS

Dar es Salaam, 29 October 2015: The United Nations is following very closely the Tanzanian general elections of 25 October and congratulates the president elect. We congratulate Tanzanians for exercising their democratic rights in a peaceful manner. We take note of the international observers statement (Commonwealth, AU, SADC and EU) of today that indicates they are pleased that the voting and counting took place in an environment of peace.

Zanzibar calm a day after the electoral commission annulled presidential polls.

Calm has been maintained in the Islands of Zanzibar as the voters await for the 90 days extension for fresh elections. Shops opened on Friday and people went about their daily routines cautiously after the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) nullified the elections citing some serious irregularities during polling process.
In Tanzanian mainland however the winner of the Union Presidential seat has been announced and John Pombe Magufuli of the ruling CCM has won by 58 percent of the votes cast against 39 percent of the opposition's and former Prime minister Mr. Edward Lowassa.The Tanzania's National Electoral Commission (NEC) stated that the annullment by the ZEC does not effect the union presidential election as the two bodies are each free and governed by different consitutions.

The Tanzanian National Electoral Commission (NEC) has announced the results of the Presidential election in which the CCM candidate John Pombe Magufuli won by 58%.Main opposition's candidate Edward Lowassa has however rejected the official results accusing the commission of announcing "fake" results and he claims that his loose coalition's own count gave him a victory with 62% of the vote.

Deo Filikunjombe dies in a tragic helicopter crash in Selous Game reserve

Grief engulfed Tanzanians yesterday after sad news broke of the death of the Ludewa costituency parliamentary candidate Mr. Deo Haule Filikunjombe.
Deo and three other people were flying to Iringa town in one of the helicopters used by the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi when it encountered engine failure and crashed at a remote location in Selous Game Reserve.

The death of Tanzanian guitarist/bandleader Mbaraka Mwinshehe, following an automobile accident in 1979, resulted in the loss of one of the spearheads of East African dance music. Having established his reputation as a member of Morogoro Jazz, between 1964 and 1973, Mwinshehe continued to make his influence felt as the leader of his own band, Super Volcano, from 1973 until his untimely death six years later.

Two female suicide bombers kill nine people in Boko Haram attack in Cameroon as the terror group continues to spread out from Nigeria

Two female suicide bombers have killed nine people in Cameroon's far north in the latest wave of terror attacks carried out by Boko Haram militants.

It comes a day after five of the group's suicide bombers killed at least 41 people in Chad, escalating concerns about the militants' reach.

The group currently controls a swathe of land in Nigeria's north east and is at war with soldiers from a coalition of countries after spreading attacks into neighbouring Cameroon and Chad.

Yesterday the two female suicide bombers carried out the attacks in the Cameroonian village of Kangaleri, security and local sources said.

Another source said: 'We currently have a toll of 11 dead, including the two attackers and nine civilians, as well as 29 wounded.'
